THE PARABLE OF THE LAMP STAND

Passage: Matthew 5:14-16; Mark 4:21-22; Luke 8:16; John 8:12
  • Audience: A great Crowd
  • Context: The Sermon on the Mount
  • Theme: Shining for God’s glory

You are the light of the world, Yes you
Gloriously illuminating God’s marvelous colors
Like a city on a hilltop, made manifest
A light that cannot be tamed
A light that keeps on shining
All for His glory.

You are light and light must shine
You illuminate God’s light as you share your life
For light does not shine for itself
Light shines so others can see
Light shines to show the way
Light is selfless.

Light has a source
His name is Jesus, the true light
He is the light that never goes out
He is the light that lights up our lives
He is He, who makes us light
In Him, our light remains effulgent and lustrous

His word is light
You have the life-changing word to share
When you share a scripture with a friend
When you post on Instagram
When you buy a Bible for a friend
You illuminate God’s light, For his glory

Who you are is light
When you love unconditionally
When you live righteously
When you handle people with love and grace
When you smile at a stranger
When you spread joy
You illuminate God’s light, for His glory.

Your gift is light
In this dim and rayless world
When you skillfully sing for His glory
When you articulately write a book
When you daintily dance a routine
When you eloquently speak in front of a crowd
When you creatively make art
You illuminate God’s light, for His glory.

Your career is light
When you graciously treat that patient with love
When you serve that client with kindness
When you judge that case with justice
When you work excellently
Giving your all in all that you do
You shine God’s light, for His glory.

Your resources are light
When you religiously give your tithe and offering
When you cheerfully give to a child on the street
When you feed that family that is struggling
When you visit the sick in hospital
When you pay a lunch bill for a friend
You illuminate God’s light, For his glory.

Your testimony is light
When you testify of God’s goodness
Of how He healed your ailment
Of how He supplied your needs according to His riches in glory
Of how He made ways in the wilderness and the sea
Of how He caused springs to break forth for you
You illuminate God’s light, For his glory.

When you are ashamed of the gospel
When you hide your gift
When you are unjust and unrighteous
When you are selfish with your resources
When you keep that miracle to yourself
You are depriving the world of light
And denying God His glory.

How beautiful would the world be
If we shined the light within us
The magnificence, splendor
Of the world lighting up
The radiance exhibited in all shades
One lampstand at a time
All glory to our Father
The source of all light.

You are the light of the world
You who is sinking in darkness
You who can’t find any goodness
You who can’t find joy
You, with tears in your eyes
Yes, you are the light of the world
Gloriously illuminating God’s colors
So shine forth, for His glory.
