THE PATH TO A PURE HEART

The heart is one of the most vital organs in our bodies. It works as a pump that takes blood to other organs which delivers nutrients and oxygen. It is located between the lungs, behind the sternum and above the diaphragm and that’s as far as I can go with the description lol. It is such a shame that after 7 years of education, I can’t even remember all the valves considering how I would recite them in my sleep lol. The functions of a heart are anything but limited. It is the organ whose activity is constantly required. If it shuts down its operations, life is lost.

Just as the heart is central in our physical body, so is it when it comes to our spiritual lives which is why Solomon cautions us in Proverbs 4:23 Guard your heart for out of it springs the issues of life.”

While the body is the recipient of the heart functions, the state of our lives depends on the state of our heart. Do you check on your heart to find out how it’s doing? How frequent do you examine your heart? Our hearts bear more than we have come to terms with ; which is why we need both the cleansing (uprooting evil roots) and circumcising (the good yet unnecessary things that crowd God)

Psalms 86:11 Direct my heart that I may follow you faithfully and grant me purity of heart that I may fear you.”  I think the Psalmist knew that our hearts never sit still in one place…he knew that there exists many things that would cause us some division. Only by His truth are we able to live a life honoring Him which is why we need to consistently open up our hearts and give him the throne of our hearts.

In Psalms 51:1 , I could sense David’s anguish as he cries for cleansing and purging. It is such a vulnerable psalm and I always feel like he speaks the words of every child who is in need of reconciliation after hurting God, the Father.  But what he repeatedly highlights is the need for an inside job. THE HEART.

Psalms 51:6 “Behold you desire truth in the inward parts, and in the hidden parts you will make me know wisdom.” NKJV

Lasting change begins from the inside. God doesn’t want us to start by changing how we preach, how we dress in church or how we  serve. He desires truth in the inward parts: in our spirit man, because that is where it all starts and when we get it right in our hearts, we get it right on the outside. The lives we live, will mirror the state of our heart. In the inward, He is able to teach us wisdom and filter our desires.  All He asks for is your heart to yield to Him.

Proverbs 23:26 “My son, give me your heart and let your eyes observe my ways.”

Stay in His Presence

What you feed on and expose yourself to, will radiate on the outside. When you stay in the presence of God, you will be able to perceive the things He wills for you and by His enablement and a personal choice on our end, we will be inclined to pursue what He seeks.

  • Seek Him:1 Chronicles 22:19 : Psalms 27:8  Also see Jeremiah 29:13
  • Prayer: God deals with our secret and selfish sins in the secret place when we lay our lives down at His altar.
  • Worship. Consistently surround yourself in atmospheres of praise endlessly and leave no room for wandering. Psalms 148:1; Psalms 100:2; Psalms 95:6 ; Psalms 98:1
  • Feed from the Word. No other manual is available for our life’s journey that is as specific and life transforming like the Word of God see 2 Timothy 3:16. God exposes us and shows us Him in the Word. Also read Hebrews 4:12
  • Meditate on the Word. Psalms 119:15;  Psalms 1:2 . Let your thoughts be consumed by God’s word.

Involve the Holy Spirit

If there is something that grows friendships or any sort of relationship, its involvement. Each of us like to be involved and it is not any different with the Holy Spirit. When we involve Him in our day to day through continuous fellowship, our hearts become in tune with the spiritual realm and the evidence of the Holy Spirit’s presence will be made manifest on the outside and seen even in our dealings with man. Galatians 5:22-23

Talk to Him like you would a friend. I personally find myself laughing with Him because of  how present He is in the minute details and even go as far as just making hilarious remarks such as “That was  definitely you” or “I really don’t feel like doing this but I ask you to  help me through it.” He is a friend, a helper and He is present. He doesn’t leave after your quiet time or when you close your Bible. He is with you as you walk on the streets, during laundry and even at a bus station. I am never alone and I hope you find that comfort too and rise to that level of relationship with Him.

Learn to inquire

On our own, we are insufficient. There is no level of independence that will make you know what to do, how to do and when to do. Throw out the notion of trusting your heart . It is deceptive; Jeremiah 17:9. By virtue of being God’s creation, dependence became part of our DNA. Being dependent on God means we are not isolated from His counsel and to enjoy this, we need to tune our heart to ask everything. There is a common statement throughout the book of Samuel “…and David inquired of the Lord.”. I desire to get there not just during rainy days but consistently.

God will never get tired of us inquiring. He glories in our dependence on Him.

When we inquire, we learn to wait for  the encouragement and expect leadership from the Holy Spirit. Isaiah 30:21 “Your eyes shall hear a word behind you, saying, walk in it. Whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left”

Practice introspection

We supervise our work, we routinely check our bank statements and monitor every transaction to make sure it is done right but  we fail to scan our hearts as frequently. David’s prayer in Psalms 139:23-24 is an invitation to daily introspection. It is not a prayer to be prayed once a month, but routinely, daily, hourly and even minute by minute. We are constantly under attack from the inside and the only way is to invite the Holy Spirit to awaken and heal. “Search my Heart O God, try me and examine my anxieties and see if there is any wicked way in me and lead me to the way everlasting.”

  • Pause: Throughout the day, stop and ask, How is my heart doing: What feelings are screaming out? If my heart could speak, what could it say? Am I bitter? Am I jealous? What then can I do to rectify and flood my heart with things pleasing before God?
  • Repent. Mercies abound greatly to those with repentant hearts “…a broken and contrite heart  the Lord will not despise.” Psalms 51:16. In repentance, there is renewal and refreshment.

PROMISES

  1. Fear of God is in them. 2 Cor 7:1 ; Psalms 86:11
  2. The pure in heart shall see God.  Matthew 5:8
  3. God is good to those with pure hearts. Psalm 73:1
  4. Stand in His Holy Place and dwell in His holy hill. Psalms 24:3-4
  5. Friendship with the King. Proverbs 22:11
  6. Gains wisdom. Psalms 51:6
  7. Straightened Paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
  8. Good fruits Jeremiah 17:9-10
  9. God shows Himself. Psalms 18:26
  10. God listens. Psalms 66:18

Ponder on all that God promises as we pursue pure hearts. Remember, it takes daily and consistent yielding to have a refreshed and renewed heart. God wants to do that for you daily, give Him your heart.

PRAYER.

Dear Lord, thank you that you are for me and you desire to pour wisdom in me. I know my heart is deceptive and is prone to pursue selfish desires and today I choose to give it to you that I may walk in your ways. I invite your Holy Spirit to renew me over and over. Work on me and give me a new heart and a new spirit.Teach me to walk in purity of heart that I may praise you. Circumcise and Cleanse my heart daily. May you be glorified in my life. In the Name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.

Stay anchored. Keep His light shining through.

With love,

Chebet.
